Open Graves Movie Review

Open Graves is a 2009 horror movie directed by Álvaro de Armiñán and starring Mike Vogel and Eliza Dushku.

In olden times in Spain, a game is made from a witches body parts and it ends up in a pawn shop where a guy called Jason(Vogel) and his pals get it from a guy working in a shop who is in a wheelchair. They have no idea that the game is dangerous. Jason and his pals are partying when he meets a girl called Erica(Dushku) and they get on well. She sees the game and suggests that they play it. The gang all play the game. When one of the group is out of the game, he goes off to get some beer and ends up dead and eaten by crabs(Yes, crabs!!!). So, the group soon begin to realise that the game has powers and anyone who plays and loses will die.

The movie goes along with people dying when they lose the game, except Jason and Erica. They go to see the guy who gave them the game and he is no longer in a wheelchair. How did this happen?
He is no help. Some dodgy detective is in the mix and he is looking for the game too. So, Jason and Erica decide that they have to finish the game so that they can get a wish when they win. They are going to wish that everything bad that happened had never happened and that they had never played the game in the first place. Erica loses and she knows that she will die so she wanders into the sea.
She is not who she seems and she is revealed to be the witch from the beginning and she gives Jason his wish that they had never played the game but there is a catch- Jason's pals are alive, but they are doomed to relive the week again and again. End of movie.

What can I say about this? I liked the idea initially but as the film plodded on, I lost interest. To say that this was silly is an understatement. I disliked it. I liked Mike Vogel as I remembered him from Under the Dome, but he couldn't save this crappy movie. The movie just wasn't any good and I waited for the ending to come as I was getting irritated with it. So, in case you didn't realise, I DIDN'T like it. I will give it a 2/10.

  1. All I can see is Evil Dead rip off with a board game as the Necronomicon. It's obvious why this didn't hold your interest. Good review.
