Angst Movie Review

Angst is a 1983 Austrian horror movie directed by Gerald Kargl and starring Erwin Leder.

The movie begins with a man(Leder), who is being released from prison. He has killed his mother. He wants to kill someone else but this time, he doesn't want to get caught. He walks around town, into a diner and looks at some local girls but considers it too big a risk to attack them. He gets a taxi and tries to attack the female driver but she throws him out. He ends up running through the woods. He finds a house there. It looks like nobody is home. Of course, he breaks in. He sees a man in a wheelchair. Just then, a car pulls up outside. It seems the owners are coming back. A woman and her daughter enter.

He tackles the daughter first and ties her up. Then he turns his attention to the mother. She fights him and gets away but he catches her and ties her up too. The daughter tries to free herself and the disabled man crawls up the stairs. He gets caught by the killer who drowns him in the bath. He unties the mother and sees that she is not well. The daughter tells him that her mother needs medicine. He makes her get it. He is intent on keeping the mother alive as he has plans for her. He shoves the pills into her mouth. She is dead. The daughter tries to run away, but it is in vain. He stabs her and kills her. He has sex with her corpse. He wanders around outside into the daylight. He discovers their car and he gets the keys. He puts the dead bodies into the car and cleans himself up. He wants more victims. He intends to show them the dead bodies to scare them before he kills them.

He takes their dog with him and he heads into town where he crashes into another car. People start looking at him. He starts to go crazy. He speeds off and he finds family pictures in the car. He drives to a petrol station and he sees the girls he saw earlier in the diner. He goes inside to get food. The police come and look at his car. They want his registration and he has to open the trunk. The movie ends with a doctor saying that the killer had it all planned. He is a sadist but he is not mentally ill.It stems from a bad childhood. He is sentenced to life in prison.

This film is a tough watch at times. It contains quite a lot of violence. It is very bleak also.
Saying that, it was interesting and I did enjoy watching it. It had been on my list for quite a while and I am glad that I finally watched it. The killer in this has no redeeming qualities. He is a total psycho and he deserves to rot in prison. The guy who plays him looks kind of weird already, so this makes it easier to believe that he is a sicko. So, this film is a harrowing, realistic experience and I recommend it. Just be warned that it is pretty graphic!I will give it a 5/10.

  1. I've seen this one and your review is a very good one detailing it but also mentioning it is violent, bleak, and tough to watch in parts. Somehow it was different than the gory slashers (which are so over the top they are almost cartoonish) which made it disturbing.

You said the killer didn't have any redeeming qualities, but in his defense he did take the dog so it wouldn't starve to death with the owners being dead. I guess even homicidal maniacs can like man's best friend haha!

  2. Thanks Tony. It is a tough watch, but worthwhile. As for the dog, I have to say that maybe he was an animal lover but otherwise, a total psychopath!!!:D
