Sleepless Movie Review 317

Sleepless is a 2001 Italian horror/thriller directed by Dario Argento and starring Max Von Sydow.

In 1983, Detective Ulisse Moretti(Von Sydow) is investigating murders in Turin. They call the murders The Dwarf Murders and they have a suspect in mind. He is called Vincenzo de Fabritiis and he is a writer. When he dies, the case seems closed as the cops think that he was the killer. Cut to modern day and a prostitute is brutally murdered along with her friend by an unknown killer. The cops come and they wonder if this is the same killer from years ago. They call to Moretti for help, but he has now retired and he is not interested in helping. When another woman is murdered, Moretti has a change of heart and he shows up at the crime scene. He is sure that it is the killer from 1983.A guy called Giacomo(Stefano Dionisi) comes to stay with his friend Lorenzo(Roberto Zibetti). Giacomo knows Moretti as his mother was murdered by the original Dwarf murderer and he calls in to see him.

They talk and they go to Vincenzo de Fabrititiis' house to look for clues on the killer. They don't find much. They then go to the train station where the prostitute was killed and see if they can find anything. There is a dead guy at the station who had the killers pen. Moretti is told to back off now by the cops.Lorenzo gets poisoned on a night out when his drink is spiked but he doesn't die. There is something strange afoot. Was it meant for Giacomo? Moretti and Giacomo go back to de Fabritiis' house and find a nursery rhyme the killer was using in his killings. His mother is there and she tells them that she killed her son after he was accused of the killings and she gets them the gun that she used. She thinks that her son was not the killer now. But she falls from a balcony when she thinks that she sees him. They discover that an old hobo is using a dwarf puppet to make people think that the dwarf is still in the house. Moretti and Giacomo follow him to see who he is working for. They find Lorenzo's father there and the whole sordid story unravels. It turns out that Lorenzo was the killer all of this time. He was just a child in 1983 and the police thought that it was a dwarf, not thinking that it could be a child. He has resumed his killing ways and his dad was trying to protect him. The cops show up and they shoot Lorenzo.

An interesting thriller from Argento. I liked it. It was a whodunit and there were some great kills in it.

I hadn't heard much about this film before I watched it, but I think that it is worth a watch and it is entertaining. I had an idea who the killer was early on, but that didn't spoil the film at all. I recommend this to all fans of horror/thriller. It gets a 7/10.

The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 9

The action continues on from the last time when The Governor met his end after storming the prison.
This episode is a slow one where not much happens. Michonne gets herself two walker pals and drags them around with her to help her protect herself. Rick and Carl are in a bad way and they find a house to rest. Rick isn't in a good way and he needs to rest. They board up the house and Rick rests while Carl goes around killing a few walkers on his own. He is mad at Rick who is unconscious.

Carl goes looking for food in nearby houses. He is confronted by a walker and he locks it in a room and heads back to Rick. He sees Rick crawling around and wonders if he has been bitten, but he is okay and Carl is relieved as he doesn't want to be alone. Michonne sees the tracks that Rick and Carl have made and she goes looking for them. Rick comes to and he talks with Carl, telling him that he he is a man now. Michonne arrives at the house and sees Rick and Carl and is overjoyed. She knocks at the door and Rick tells Carl that it is for him and laughs.

A very slow episode with not much happening. It is setting up the story for future episodes I guess, but it is a bit dull.

Ice Spiders Movie Review 316

Ice Spiders is a 2007 Sci-Fi/Horror movie made for the Sci Fi Channel. It is directed by Tibor Takacs and stars Patrick Muldoon, Vanessa A. Williams and Thomas Calabro.

The story begins at a ski resort in Utah. Dash Dashiell(Patrick Muldoon) is a former Olympic skier and he is now working as a ski instructor. He hurt his leg years ago and that put an end to his career. He works with Frank (Stephen J. Cannell). There is a large group of young people at the resort and they are looking forward to a great skiing vacation. Two hunters are in the woods and they come upon something large and something with a lot of legs. It is a giant mutant spider! It devours them and goes looking for more nibbles! It turns out that there is a lab there and they have been working on mutating spiders for their web silk and the larger the spider, the more silk it will make. Dr April Sommers(Vanessa A. Williams) has been experimenting on the spiders, along with Professor Marks and they have created massive monster spiders. April didn't realise that Marks was accelerating their growth and making them too big.

The spiders begin to take over the ski lodge and go on a killing spree. Dash and April have to try and get the skiers to safety while the spiders try and get them. The army is called in but there are only a couple of guys who are working with Marks to capture the spiders, not kill them. Captain Baker(Calabro) has his army guys on the hunt for the spiders and they are at odds with Dash and the others as Dash thinks that the spiders should be killed, not captured. There are plenty of comedy moments as the spiders try and kill everyone. In the end, most of the spiders are killed, but one. The army guys come and take one away, alive. Dash tries to kill it, but he is stopped as the army drive away with the spider in their possession. Dash has no choice but to forget it.

This was a fun movie with some funny moments. The spiders are massive so if you are like me and don't like them, be warned. I watched this and tried not to shudder as the massive spiders scuttled around. It is better than a lot of bigger budget movies and I would recommend it for a good laugh. I will give it a 6/10.

Thor:The Dark World Movie Review 315

Thor:The Dark World is a 2013 superhero movie and a sequel to Thor. Unless you have been living under a rock, you will know all about Thor. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Christopher Eccleston.

It carries on from the first movie and we see that Thor's brother, Loki(Hiddleston) has been imprisoned on Asgard for his crimes in the first movie. Then, we have a history lesson and we learn that Bor, father of Odin(Hopkins) fought against a Dark Elf Malekith and that Malekith had a secret weapon called the Aether. Bor and his forces manages to defeat Malekith and his army in their homeland,Svartalfheim. Bor buried the Aether and thinks that that will be the last of it, but Malekith has escaped with some of his men and they are in suspended animation, waiting for the day when they can come back and get their revenge. Thor is going around making all of the nine realms safe, but there is something strange happening and Jane Foster(Portman) can see it. She and her pals go to an abandoned warehouse where there are portals to some other world. They are amazed by these, but Jane gets sucked into one of them and she is exposes to the Aether. She comes back, but she is not the same.

Thor discovers that something has happened to Jane and he comes to earth. She is taken to Asgard and she releases some sort of force. Malekith is awakened by this evil force and he begins to prepare to go to Asgard and cause some destruction. He creates a Kursed which is a huge mean warrior and he brings it with him. They steal into Asgard and search for Jane who has the Aether in her. They find her and they kill Thor's mother Frigga(Rene Russo) to get her. They kill loads of others and when Thor finds what they have done, he has to enlist the help of Loki to get out of Asgard and get Jane away. He wants to lure Malekith with the Aether and then they can have their revenge. They go to Svartalfheim and wait to Malekith to take the bait. He does so and the Aether is released from Jane.
Thor can't destroy it though and Loki gets killed while fighting the Kursed. Thor tells him that he will let Odin know of his sacrifice. Thor goes to London with Jane where Malekith is going to release the Aether and destroy the universe. They have to fight him and with the help of Jane's friends, they do so. Malekith is destroyed and Thor goes home. His father, Odin, wants him to take the throne, but he tells him that he can't and he tells him that Loki made a huge sacrifice for them all. He leaves and it is revealed that Odin is actually Loki!

There are a couple of post credit scenes. The first one has the Aether being given to a man called The Collector. It is to be hidden away and never used again. The Collector takes it and then says 'One down, five to go' so this suggests that he will be a baddie in the future. The next scene is in London where Thor comes to Earth to visit Jane and we see a monster which was released during the fighting, stomping around London...A good movie though not as good as the first one. There wasn't enough Loki in it, but I did enjoy Malekith and I thought that he was a good baddie. I can't say I like Portman at all. She just isn't my cup of tea and I don't think she brings much to the movie. Hemsworth and Hiddleston steal the show as Thor and Loki and Eccleston is good as Malekith. Lots of action and some comedic moments which make the movie worth watching. It was entertaining and fun so I will give it an 8/10.
