The Final Movie Review 306

The Final is a 2010 thriller/horror which is directed by Joey Stewart and starring Marc Donato, Jascha Washington, Justin Arnold and Lindsay Seidel.

The movie begins with a disfigured girl in a diner. People are staring at her and she is getting upset. There is a flashback. The setting is high school and there are a group of people being bullied by jocks and princesses. The jocks are hassling outcasts Dane(Donato), Jack(Eric Isenhower) and Emily(Lindsay Seidel) is being bulled by the bitchy princesses led by Bridget(Whitney Hoy). The outcasts are planning something though and it is not going to be pretty. Dane has been left a house by his uncle and it is isolated. It is perfect for their plan. They lure all of the popular kids there by telling them that there will be a huge party. It is a dress up party so they can wear masks etc.

Once there, Dane and his pals drug the kids and chain them. One of them is Kurtis(Washington) who has been a friend to the bullied kids. He came along to the party even though they didn't want him to. The torture of the bullies begins and some of them are forced to do horrible things to each other. Dane begins to get worse and worse until he loses his mind. His desire for revenge makes him want to kill everyone.
Kurtis is given a key to his chains ans manages to escape. He calls the police and manages not to get himself killed. Dane and his friends have let things get out of control and when Kurtis comes back to try and stop him, he shoots him but doesn't kill him. Emily shoots Dane, realising that he is out of control.Jack shoots her and when the police arrive, he shoots himself after telling them that there are more of them out there. It is revealed at the end of the movie that the disfigured girl is Bridget, the bully.

Not a bad movie. I liked the premise and I enjoyed the bullied kids getting their chance for revenge. It was entertaining and it moves along pretty well. All in all, it is worth a watch especially if you enjoy revenge movies! I will give it a 5/10.

American Horror Story, Season 3, Episode 2

Last time, Madame La Laurie had come back from being supposedly dead. Fiona has her captured for her own reasons. Two detectives turn up at the school looking for information about the dead frat boys.
They interview Madison and Zoe about it. Zoe admits what happened and then Fiona enters and puts a spell on the cops to forget all about it . Madison and Zoe break into the morgue where Kyle's body is. Zoe wants to bring him back to life. Meanwhile, Cordelia is having fertility treatment as she wants a child with her husband. Fiona talks to Madame La Laurie about what happened to her. It is 180 years since she was buried. She tells Fiona that Marie Laveau gave her a potion which made her immortal and then she buried her alive.

Zoe and Madison manage to bring Kyle back to life. They meet Misty Day who tells them that she can help. They go back to her place in the woods and leave him with her as she says that she will make sure that he heals up. Fiona talks with Madame La Laurie and tells her that she has to stay with her otherwise she will put her back inside the box and bury her again. Madame La Laurie has no choice but to agree. This was another good episode and there are plenty of different stories going on at the same time so it will be interesting to see what happens..

Exorcismus Movie Review 305

Exorcismus is a 2010 horror movie directed by Manuel Carballo and starring Sophie Vavasseur and Stephen Billington.

A young girl called Emma Evans(Vavasseur) becomes a troubled teen when she becomes possessed by the Devil. That is the main story of this movie. Emma's parents think that there is something wrong with her medically so she gets checked out by doctors, but there is nothing wrong with her at all. Her uncle is disgraced priest Chris(Billington) who was involved in an exorcism gone wrong and expelled from the church. She tells him what is happening and he seems to know what to do. Her parents are shocked by all of this but when they see that she is possessed, they agree to let Chris help and perform his exorcisms on her.

Chris films her and he tries to expel the demon from her. It is a lengthy process and it takes its toll on Emma and her family. When Chris finds that he is having trouble, he calls in a pal of his to come. Emma's little brother gets hit by a car after she throws his ball into the road and he dies. She feels responsible. Chris tries to reason with her. She tells her mother that Chris had shown her things about the Devil before she had become possessed and that she and her friends has messed around with a Ouija board and called up the Devil because her mother had been annoying her. Her mother stabs herself and ends up in hospital. Emma wants to stop the exorcism as she doesn't think it is helping and she realises that Chris tricked her into calling up the Devil when he showed her all of his stuff and made her think that it was OK. He tells her that it was experiment to see if he could prove that the Devil was real. She pulls a knife on him. The demon comes out and he tries to exorcise it once and for all. He fails and when Emma's dad comes in, he stabs and kills him.
The demon wants Emma to kill Chris, but she won't. She stabs herself instead. She goes to hospital. Chris kills himself after everything he has done. The movie ends with Emma and her mother together..

This film was okay. I wouldn't watch it again because I thought that it was a bit slow and the story was sparse. The characters were awful and I just didn't like it.Oh yes, Doug Bradley has a tiny part in it but that wouldn't make me change my mind. I would give this one a wide berth unless you like slow and dull horror movies...It gets a 3/10.

American Horror Story, Season 3, Episode 1

It's back and this time the focus is on witches. American Horror Story:Coven stars a lot of the same cast as the previous two seasons so there are a lot of familiar faces here and a few new ones too.

This season begins with in 1834 with a woman called Madame LaLaurie(Kathy Bates). She is a wealthy woman and she is well known in New Orleans. What people don't know about her is that she is evil and she uses her slaves to torture as she pleases. She finds out that one of her slaves has had sex with her daughter and she brings her to her torture chamber and sews his mouth shut. Then she puts the severed head of a bull on him and leaves him there. Unfortunately for her, the man was the lover of a voodoo priestess called Marie Laveau(Angela Bassett) and she is not too pleased with what she has done. She goes to Madame LaLaurie with a potion, claiming that it will give her a new life, but instead she collapses and seems dead.

Cut to modern day and a young girl called Zoe Benson(Taissa Farmiga) is with her boyfriend and they are having sex when he dies of a brain aneurysm. It turns out that Zoe is a witch and that witches are in her family. She has to be sent away to New Orleans to a school for witches. She arrives at the school and she meets the headmistress Cordelia Foxx(Sarah Paulson) and the other three witches- Madison(Emma Roberts), Nan(Jamie Brewer) and Queenie(Gabourey Sidibe). She discovers that the witches are under threat as there are not enough witches breeding children and they could die out. Also, people are afraid of witches and Zoe finds out about a witch called Misty Day(Lily Rabe) who was burned at the stake by locals when they discovered her identity.

The supreme witch is Fiona Goode(Jessica Lange) and she is trying to regain her youth. She has procedures and uses anything to help, but she is still old. She hears about the death of Misty Day and she goes to the witch school to see what is to be done. She is Cordelia's mother but they are not very close. She thinks that the witches need to stand up and fight. Madison and Zoe get on well and become friends. They go to a frat party and meet some boys. Madison has her drink spiked and she gets raped by a gang of frat boys. Zoe talks to a guy called Kyle(Evan Peters) who is also a frat boy but who is not involved in the rape and is horrified to see what his buddies have done. He tries to stop them but they knock him out and take him with them to their bus where they try to escape. Madison is very angry and she follows them and blows up their bus with them inside. Zoe goes to the hospital afterwards to see if Kyle is still alive. He has died but one of the others is still alive so she has sex with him and he dies of an aneurysm just like the other guy. Fiona finds out that Madame LaLaurie was buried alive so she digs her up and brings her into the school to talk..

A very interesting start to the new season. I think that this show is very well made and well acted so this season will be great!

The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 3

Last episode, there were two charred corpses in the prison yard. This episode begins with Tyreese angry that his girlfriend was dragged out and set alight. He talks to Rick and Daryl about and it and he gets violent. Rick takes his down and gives him a beating. Hershel talks to Rick about the flu situation and he tells him that it is getting worse. They need to have a meeting and see what there is to do. Sasha begins to get sick and has to go to isolation. The meeting the next day ends with the agreement that medicine is needed to treat the symptoms of the flu. There is an animal hospital close by and there might be some antibiotics there.

The sick are herded into one of the cell blocks under quarantine. Glenn is beginning to get sick too.
Tyreese wants Rick to find the killer of Karen and he is determined to get whoever did it. Rick wonders who it was. Daryl, Tyreese and Michonne head off to get the medicine supplies in a car. Hershel tries to help the sick in isolation. The group in the car hear a garbled message about sanctuary and as they try and hear more, they are confronted by masses of walkers. They surround the car. Daryl has to try and get out of their path. They have to abandon their car and head off on foot.

Rick and Carol talk and he tells her that he knows that she would do anything to protect the group and he also asks her if she was the one who killed Karen. She replies that she was and walks away. There is something more going to happen there I would say. Rick is left wondering about Carol. An interesting episode. I think that Carol has turned into a tough character who will do anything to protect the ones she cares about. I am eagerly awaiting the next episode!

Happy Halloween from Jigsaw's Lair!

We are here once again on the day that it is considered GOOD to be frightened! Some of us love being frightened every day of the year but you have to enjoy the holiday anyway... I have been going through my DVD's looking for my copy of Halloween(1978 original of course) and I have chosen a few other traditional horror movies for a start. I like Friday the 13th(1980), A Nightmare on Elm Street(1984), Silver Bullet.

For my not so obvious picks I would say Poltergeist might be nice for a change and maybe The Legend of Hell House. I also like Suspiria and Tenebre for a change of pace. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is another movie that would be fun. If you are looking for slashers, then maybe My Bloody Valentine(1981),The Prowler, The House on Sorority Row (1983).  There are so many great movies to watch and so little time that I guess you have to be choosy. I can only say what I like and even though I would love to watch tons of movies today, it's not possible. Trick or Treat(1986) is a fun offering and it is worth a look. Trick r Treat is a 2009 anthology with some interesting stories; it is sort of like Twilight Zone etc. Try House(1986) for some harmless fun. Of course I couldn't leave out the Saw franchise for Halloween. My personal favourites are Saw 1 and 2.

There you have it. These movies are just a tiny selection of my favourites so if you like the, put them on tonight and have fun!!Happy Halloween....

The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 2

Last time, we saw one of the young kids get sick and collapse on the floor and die. This episode begins with that same kid who has come back as a walker. He begins to attack people, turning them into the undead also. The walkers are coming together and attacking everyone from inside the prison so the survivors have to kill their friends.

They discover that there is some disease killing some of the people and it is like a flu virus. The animals are not immune to it either. They had a pig and it died too. They realise that they have to separate those who have contracted the deadly virus and those who are healthy. Carol has to kill one of the survivors who has been bitten and she promises to take care of his two young daughters. Michonne seems to have a softer side as she and Beth chat about loss and Michonne is brought to tears by little Judith, suggesting that something tragic had happened in her life before this.

Someone is throwing dead rats at the fence and this is drawing the walkers closer and closer. They converge on the fence and almost knock it over. There is somebody working against the group and it seems that there might be an inside man.Rick lures them away from the fence by slaughtering his piglets.
Carl and Rick chat and Rick begins to strap on his gun again. Carl has his gun too as things are getting messy. Tyreese discovers that his sick girlfriend and another survivor are dead. They have been dragged outside and set alight...

Good episode. It seems that there is someone in the camp who is working against the survivors which is interesting. This flu virus seems set to wipe out a lot of the survivors so I wonder how long will it be before it is just the core gang again!

Savages Crossing Movie Review 304

Savages Crossing is a 2011 Australian thriller directed by Kevin James Dobson and starring John Jarratt(Wolf Creek), Craig McLachlan, Chris Haywood and Jessica Napier.

The Wonga River Roadhouse is the setting for this movie and it revolves around a man called Phil(Jarratt) who is released from prison. His wife and son leave the house the moment they hear that he has been released so we know that he is not a good guy. They are driving along when a huge storm hits and they have to stop at the roadhouse. Kate(Napier) is the waitress there and Mory(McLachlan) owns it. He drives a truck and tends his livestock. He meets Phil who has followed his wife Sue(Angela Punch McGregor) and son Damian. Phil gets his car caught in the storm at Savages Crossing and he can't get out. Mory saves him and brings him to the roadhouse where two girls, Shae and Mickey have stopped for shelter also.

Sue has hired a guy to kill Phil and he turns up at the roadhouse too. As Phil is confronting his wife about the money he had etc the guy catches him but Phil manages to escape and a cat and mouse chase  begins and ends with Phil shooting the guy and making his way back to the roadhouse. Mory and the others are horrified when he threatens them with a gun. His wife and son are gone and he goes mad. In fact, they are hiding in the barn. He warns everyone that if they are hiding his wife and son, he will hurt them. He takes Kate and he ties her to a tree in the river to drown. Mory tackles him and brings him down. He goes to save Kate.Phil comes back into the roadhouse and tells everyone that he is worth more dead to his wife than alive. Phil threatens Sue and Damian and Mory knocks him out and locks him into a room. Damian goes into the room and he drowns his father. Mory sees Phil dead and realises that they have killed him but Sue remarks that it was an accident and he couldn't prove that Damian killed his father. Mory realises that Sue was not as innocent as she seemed...

This was an interesting thriller and I liked it. It was tense and the acting wasn't bad. I think that it is low budget but good fun all the same. If you like Australian movies, then this won't disappoint. I give it a 5/10.

The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 1

It's finally back! The new season of The Walking Dead begins and we are back with Rick and company.
Things have changed since the last time we saw them. They are growing their own food now and they even have a pig! The new people have settled in with Rick and the others and they are working as a team.
The walkers are coming in waves and they come to the fence. They are all spiked in the head by the group but there is no let up. Michonne is looking for The Governor who has disappeared. She comes back to the prison to visit with the survivors.Rick doesn't have his gun with him anymore. He is trying to set an example for Carl who was getting involved in the killing last season.

Rick is out in the woods when he meets an Irish woman called Clara(Kerry Condon) who is looking for food for her husband who she says is weak. Rick is suspicious of her as she seems very dodgy. He lets her lead him back to her camp where he realises that her husband is a walker and she wanted to let him eat Rick. He is not happy with her but she stabs herself so that she can turn into a walker too and be with her husband. Rick is horrified and leaves them. Elsewhere, Daryl and some others go to a supermarke to get supplies. There are a load of walkers on the roof which collapses on top of them. They have to fight their way through the walkers who are falling in on top of them. They lose a man in the fight. A young man called Patrick is not feeling well back at the prison. He goes into the shower and as he is standing under the water, he collapses and dies. It seems that there is some virus spreading around...

A good episode. The series is going to have to take a new direction I suppose as they can't just stay in the prison. I am looking forward to see what happens from here!

Don't Look Up Movie Review 303

Don't Look Up is a 2009 horror movie directed by Fruit Chan and starring Reshad Strik,Eli Roth,Henry Thomas and Rachael Murphy.

In Romania years ago, a woman made a pact with the Devil to bear him a child in return for the love of a powerful man. She kept her promise and the child was born and called Matya. In the village where she lived, the locals were horrified when they saw the mark of the Devil on the child and took the girl and tortured and killed her. She is said to have haunted the village since. In 1928, a movie maker called Bela Olt(Roth) is making a movie about Matya with an actress called Lila Kis(Murphy). The cast and crew of the film vanished and the movie was never found.A filmmaker called Marcus Reed(Strik) and his producer Josh Petri(Thomas) go to Romania to make a movie about Matya. They bring their crew with them and go to the original place where the 1928 film was made.

Strange things begin to happen to them and Marcus has weird visions of Matya etc. The rest of the movie is pretty much people getting killed etc and Marcus wondering if Matya has come back for revenge. I thought that this movie was not good. I didn't really like it at all. It was dull and a bit too obvious for my liking. It just wasn't well made. I wouldn't watch it again. I would skip it unless you like really bad movies. It gets a 2/10.

The Conjuring Movie Review 302

The Conjuring is a 2013 horror movie directed by James Wan(Saw franchise,Insidious) and starring Lili Taylor, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson and Ron Livingston. It is based on actual events.

The story revolves around a couple called Ed and Lorraine Warren(Wilson and Farmiga who investigate the paranormal and they are called in by a family who are being haunted. Carolyn (Taylor) and her husband Roger(Livingston) move into a house with their five daughters in 1971. They think that the house will be a new start for them. Things start to go wrong immediately. Their dog dies and Carolyn notices that she is bruised. There are noises in the house and one of the daughters sees someone who attacks her.One of the daughters has an imaginary friend who talks to her.It becomes obvious that something is very wrong in this house and the family are at their wits end. They find out about a ghost hunting couple called Ed and Lorraine Warren and Carolyn approaches them and asks them to come and see if there is anything they can do.

Ed and Lorraine come to the house and realise that there is something very evil in the house. They agree to try and get evidence of it and see if they can help the family. They need to get evidence of the ghost before they can go to the Catholic Church for an exorcism. They stay in the house and set up equipment to catch the ghosts. They discover that the house was once owned by a witch who was very evil and that she put a curse on anyone who takes her land. Carolyn is possessed by the witch and she tries to attack her own daughter and kill her. Ed and Lorraine have to perform their own exorcism and try and save Carolyn from the demon.

This was a very good movie and I really liked it. It is old school horror and it bears more than a passing resemblance to The Amityville Horror. It reminded me of that movie what with the family moving into a new house and the daughter having an invisible friend. It is spooky and there were some great scares. I love these kinds of movies when they are made well and this is. I liked the story and the acting was good. There was very little I could complain about here. I highly recommend this. If you are looking for gore and brainless fun, then this is not for you. If, like me, you are delighted when you find a horror movie that you can actually enjoy without reaching for the fast forward button, watch this. You won't be disappointed! I am giving this a 9/10.

The Ouija Experiment Movie Review 301

The Ouija Experiment is a 2011 horror movie directed by Israel Luna and starring Justin Armstrong, Eric Window and Carson Underwood.

This film is another home movie horror with shaking cameras etc etc. It concerns five people who decide to get together and use the Ouija board. You just know that nothing good is going to come from this!
Brandon(Underwood) is filming the event for his film class. He goes over to Michael's(Armstrong) place where he has a Ouija board. With Michael are Lynette(Swisyzinna),her brother Calvin(Window) and Calvin's girlfriend, Shay. Michael explains the rules of the board to them. He tells them that when they have made contact with a spirit, before they leave, they have to say goodbye to it or else the board is open and any spirits could come through. They all sit down and start. They make contact with a little girl called Gracie and chat to her for a while. Then they say goodnight and promise to come back and talk again tomorrow.

The next day, they talk to it again but due to an argument, they don't say goodbye and it is only later that Michael says goodbye. Weird things start to happen to each of them. They wonder if they have unleashed something evil from the board. Calvin is the first one to die and one by one, they get killed by something malevolent. Michael looks up in his attic and finds a scrapbook about a little girl called Gracie who was killed in the house by her mother who then killed the neighbour who saw what she had done and then herself. They brought back the mother and she is angry. They face off with her and they realise that they have to burn the Ouija board to get rid of her. She chases them etc and in the end it is just Lynette and Michael left. They get the board into the fire and burn it. The demon disappears. Michael sees Gracie and the neighbour and they are happy now. He realises that he is dead and Lynette is alive...

Not a bad effort and I thought that it was entertaining enough. It is not great, but not dire either. I have seen way worse. I liked the idea and apart from some awful acting, this film was watchable. It had its spooky moments and I found it was good fun. I give it a 5/10.

The Amityville Haunting Movie Review 300

The Amityville Haunting is a 2011 horror movie directed by Geoff Meed and starring Luke Barnett, Jason Williams, Amy Van Horne and Tyler Shamy.

This movie is a found footage horror and it is the same as all of the others you have seen. It starts with a family moving into the Amityville house. Strange things happen and they see spooky things etc etc. The reason I am not going into details for this movie is that it was crappy. I could see it all coming and there was little scares or originality. It was boring. One of the kids has a camcorder and he films everything that happens in the house. You just know that there will be some ghostly occurences and doors opening etc.
The Amityville story or whatever you want to call it has been done to death and this movie is just a reminder of that.

I loved the original Amityville Horror with James Brolin and Margot Kidder and some of the sequels were enjoyable too, but when you count how many bad movies have been based on this house, you realise that it has to stop somewhere. Anyway I'm sure there will be another reboot sometime so we will have yet another Amityville movie!Do yourself a favour and skip this movie and revisit the original. It is much scarier, there is better acting and it is a classic. This gets 1/10. Very poor.

Storm Warning Movie Review 299

Storm Warning is a 2007 Australian horror/thriller movie directed by Jamie Blanks.Blanks also directed Urban Legend, Valentine and the remake of Long Weekend. It stars Robert Taylor,Nadia Fares and David Lyons(Revolution).

The story is pretty simple. Rob(Taylor) and his French wife Pia(Fares) are going out boating one day and they get lost in the middle of nowhere during a storm. They discover a house and they go inside for some shelter. They discover that there is  marijuana growing in the shed and Rob thinks that this was a mistake.
The owners come back and they are not pleased to see them. Jimmy (Lyons) and his brother Brett(Mathew Wilkinson) are backward yokels and they are amused but they have guns and other weapons on them so they are not nice guys. They are threatening and even though they don't say anything outright, Rob knows that something bad is going to happen. They try to leave, but Jimmy and Brett won't let them.

They humiliate Pia and then tell them that they will have to spend the night in the barn. There are no phones around so they are stuck. They make a break for it, but get caught. They break Rob's leg so he is useless. Pia is inventive so she sets about making some booby traps to catch them. Brett is the first one to die. He gets caught in one of her traps. The father of the two boys, Poppy wants Pia for himself so Jimmy brings her up to him. She does something to him and he dies. Jimmy is the last one left and he is harder to kill. Rob and Pia try to escape and they eventually take care of Jimmy and escape. This film was decent and I liked that the victims were inventive and killed the bad guys. It was a good thriller and I would recommend it. I like Australian horror movies and this one is entertaining and well worth a watch. It gets a 6/10.
