This movie was very
controversial over the years and it is largely
misunderstood. The
'critics' would say that it
degrades women and that it
exploits women, but anyone who has watched the film will tell you that
that isn't true. It is true that
I Spit On Your Grave or
Day Of The Woman(as it is called too) is actually
not degrading women. The woman
comes out on top. This movie was
banned in many countries and that only served to make it
more popular!
Banning movies is like
censorship which
shouldn't happen in any shape or form. Anyway, on with the film. A female writer,
Jennifer Hills(
Camille Heaton), moves to a
quiet house in the country so that s
he can finish her
novel. She is seen by some of the
local men who decide to
abduct her so that she can have
sex with their mildly
retarded friend,
Matthew. They grab her while she is in her boat and take her
captive.
She is
subjected to
gang rape and
sodomy and she
crawls back to her house where the men catch her and proceed to
continue their rape. They make
Matthew have
sex with her but
he can't and then they order him to
kill her which he
pretends to do. It sounds terrible so far, but the
best is yet to come. She
recovers after the men leave, thinking that she is dead. She decides that they
need to pay for what they have done to her and she begins to
hatch a plan. She lures
Matthew to her house with promises of sex, then proceeds to put a
noose around his neck and she
hangs him. One down.Another guy is
castrated in the bath. He dies of
blood loss. There are
two guys left.
She
confronts the two men as they come to
finish her off in their boat. They end up in the water and she
kills the two of them in the water. Job done. They showed her
no mercy so they do not get any
mercy from her. What is the big deal about this movie? It is just a
simple plot- the
evil men get whats coming to them. That is what I love about this movie. The
revenge is sweet and the woman gets her back on those men who
raped her. It isn't a
'video nasty' and I think that it is a
very good movie to watch. If you haven't already seen it, watch it and
make up your own mind.

Looks like my kind of movie!
I Spit on Your Grave was one of the most awesome movies ever made. Anyone who thinks it is degrading to women obviously hasn't sat through the entire movie, which I must admit might be a challenge for more sensitive people and those with weak stomachs.
I remember the first time I ever saw it, it was in the early 1980's and I was about 14 to 15 years old. There was a video store in the small town where I grew up, and for those "in the know", you could ask the owner for a movie that wasn't on the shelf. What possessed us to ask about a horribly horrible horror instead of a porno that weekend, I don't know, but at the end of the day we had ISOYG in our hands.
The guy screaming in the bathtub, I can still remember that like I just watched it yesterday. And if I remember correctly, one of the things that was a psychological strangeness to it was didn't the guy recognize her and think she was coming back for more of what she liked?
There was definitely something about this film. I haven't forgot about it after all of these years, and just the other day when someone told me they were thinking of renting it, I couldn't help but tell her to go for it.
Great review.
