The Invention of Lying is written, directed and stars Ricky Gervais. He is responsible for The Office series and Extras so I knew that this movie would be funny. It also stars Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Louis C.K, Jeffrey Tambor, Fionnula Flanagan, Rob Lowe and Tina Fey. There is a great cast as you can see and there are great cameos from Jason Bateman, Christopher Guest, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Edward Norton. Ricky Gervais plays Mark Bellison in a world where everyone tells the truth to each other. He is a movie screenwriter who writes movies about historical facts as there is no such thing as fiction.
Bellison loses his job as he was stuck writing about The Black Plague and while he gets to go on a date with Anna McDoogles played by Jennifer Garner, she is not attracted to him. She is brutally honest and tells him that she likes him, but he would have poor genes for producing offspring. One day,Bellison decides to say that he has more money in his account than he actually has and suddenly.....he has invented lying!!! He uses his new invention to become wealthy and make his life easier, but he decides that he cannot lie to get Anna. He hopes that she will decide to be with him without his lies.Brad Kessler played by Rob Lowe is another screenwriter who wants Anna for himself and he is much better looking than Mark so he has a better chance with Anna. How will Mark get the girl without lying???
This is a good comedy with a lot of laughs and it is a typical Ricky Gervais comedy. His Office writing partner Stephen Merchant has a cameo as a burgled man as well. If you like The Office type humour you will like this. Rob Lowe plays his usual good looking bad guy role like in Wayne's World. The Invention of Lying is very original and is very entertaining throughout. It wouldn't be a classic comedy but it is a good one and I would definitely recommend it to you. If you are a Ricky Gervais fan then you will really like this so check it out now!!
The Invention of Lying- 6/10
